Gilmore Girls Review- Writing Series

Wonderfully Weird

It is hard to think of a show that brings more warmth than a freshly made cup of hot chocolate. That show is none other than Gilmore Girls. This gentle- comedy about a single mother and inn-keeper Lorelai Gilmore and her bookworm daughter Rory Gilmore in the dreamy town of Stars Hollow beautifully takes watchers through the mother- daughter duo’s life.

This lighthearted television serial introduces characters with wit and humour and is filled with intelligent sarcasm. The dialogues are filled with quotes from classic literature novels and references to classic tv shoes and movies are also made. The Gilmore girls are smart women with their head on their shoulders who elegantly tackled any comments of misogyny thrown towards them.

With snappy dialogue and several pop culture references, the show explores class and privilege. Lorelai, who is born into Richard and Emily Gilmore’s house is a rebel since childhood. Growing up in an extremely privileged household and being part of high society, Lorelai sees through the superficiality and hopes to never follow in her parent’s footsteps. She gets pregnant at sixteen and leaves her parents’ house to become a maid at the independence inn, where she later becomes the executive manager. The show only shows a few flashbacks of Lorelai’s past, but the majority of the show focuses on her present life with Rory in the town of Stars Hollow.

The series shows several characters who are very important to both Lorelai and Rory. Luke Danes, a local diner owner in the town is a very important character in the show. He eventually becomes Lorelai’s love interest, but watchers are pulled into this aspect of the show from the beginning as Luke’s love for Lorelai was obvious to us but not to her. The intrigue and curiosity leaves watchers drawn into watching episode after episode. Sookie who plays Lorelai’s best friend and head chef at the Independence Inn is a klutzy character and later goes on to open The Dragonfly Inn with Lorelai. She is bubbly and quirky and is known to be a perfectionist. Lane Kim, Rory’s loving best friend is raised in an incredibly strict Christian Korean household. She has quite a love for pop culture and hides her cd’s in the floorboards of her room. The character of Lane is filled with wit, humour and chaos.

Critics praise the Gilmore Girls for its multicultural and trans-generational appeal. One of the themes of this show is family and connections. Not only do the characters have strong connections with each other, but so do the viewers. After having watched the show, you will feel as though you know each character personally. Despite loathing her parents, Lorelai is often seeing having a good time with the same people she despises, after all they are her family.

From romance, to comedy and of course drama, this show will have you hooked till the very end. Each character has been written with such uniqueness and the sense of humour and sarcasm in this show is beyond spectacular. The quirkiness of the fictional town of Stars Hollow will leave you wishing that you could live there. From every set, to every dialogue and plot, the series has been written with such precision, making every character wonderfully weird. The show is simply artistic, touching and delightful to watch.
